HEADLINE: NASA shooting; two engineers dead in Houston --------------------------------------- CAPTION: NASA officials are trying to figure out how a contract worker sneaked a handgun into the Johnson Space Center and killed another employee before shooting himself. A hostage escaped with minor injuries. (April 20) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] SOT: Michael Coats: "we have had been a tragedy here at the Johnson Space Center that has left two of NASA family members dead." (vo) EVERYONE KNOWS SPACE TRAVEL IS DANGEROUS, WORKING AT JOHNSON SPACE CENTER HAS ITS RISKS.. BUT IT'S NOT SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE THIS.. SOT: Coats: What has happened is that Bill Phillips apparently shot another employee, David Beverly. Both were engineers working in Building 44. (VO) FRIDAY AFTERNOON A GUNMAN TOOK KILLED A co-worker, took a woman hostage and kept her taped to a chair for about three hours, before he TOOK HIS OWN LIFE... BUT BEFORE HE DID POLICE SAY BILL PHILLIPS LEFT A MESSAGE- (SOT) Chief Harold Hurtt: There were a series of telephone numbers and names of people to be notified that appeared to be left by the shooter, himself. (vo) The victim's wife says her husband had mentioned Phillips' name in the past, but didn't elaborate. (VO) AS DARKNESS FELL OVER THE SPACE CENTER SECURITY REMAINED TIGHT, WITH MEDIA RESTRICED TO JUST ONE AREA AND SEVERAL STREETS STILL CLOSED.. (SOT) Coats: Earlier in the week we had, in fact, reviewed , as a result of the Virginia Tech shootings, had reviewed our own procedures here at the Johnson Space Center -- security procedures and response procedures and so forth. But of course we never believed this could happen here to our family and our situation." (SU) AS NASA VOWS TO REVIEW THEIR SECURITY POLICIES AND FIGURE OUT EXACTLY WHAT HAPPNED HERE. THEY ARE FORCED TO DEAL WITH A SECOND BLACK EYE THIS YEAR. IN JANUARY ASTRONAUT LISA NOWAK LEFT HOUSTON FOR FLORIDA WHERE SHE WAS ARRESTED ACCUSED OF STAKLING ANOTHER WOMAN SHE VIEWED AS A ROMANTIC RIVAL... Workers on a shipyard in Okpo-dong, South Korea have super human strength, thanks to a new robotic suit. Daewoo Shipbuilding, the company that makes some of the biggest ships in the world worked to test the robotic suits last year. Exoskeleton suits aim to revolutionize many aspects of our lives. Workers on a shipyard in Okpo-dong, South Korea have super human strength, thanks to a new robotic suit. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co, the company that makes some of the biggest ships in the world, was testing the robotic suits last year. They can reportedly fit people between 63 and 73 inches tall, and allow the person wearing it to easily lift a 70-pound piece of metal. The suit frame itself is made of aluminum alloy, carbon, and steel all powered by hydraulic joints. It weighs 60 pounds, but it doesn’t feel heavy because the suit supports its own weight, and moves along with the person wearing it. People strap into the suit starting with their feet, moving up their body, where hydraulic joints and electric motors are connected to a backpack that powers and controls the system. Eventually, the developers want people wearing the suit to be able to lift 200 pounds, which will increase productivity by allowing workers to easily lift large, heavy pieces of metal.
